My children love granola. They think it's the best breakfast. But I find that the store-bought stuff is quite sweet and expensive in comparison to the home-made. Making granola is very simple and fun if the kids want to help. Here's our recipe:
Chocolate-Hazelnut-Granola
- 3 cups rolled oats
- 1/2 cup sesame seeds
- 1/2 cup sunflower seeds
- 1/2 cup hazelnuts, thickly sliced
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- pinch of salt
- 1/3 cup oil or melted butter
- 1/3 cup honey
- 1/4 cup apple juice or water
- 1/2 - 1 bar of dark chocolate
Instructions: Combine first the dry ingredients and then add the wet ingredients. Kneed everything together like dough and add more juice/water if too dry (be careful not to add too much). When the dough is sticking together but also crumbling into little chunks you spread it on a baking tray with baking paper and bake/dry at 150 C/300F. This will take an hour or longer. Turn the granola occasionaly gently by hand. You will feel, when it is perfectly dry.
Now cut the chocolate into little pieces and add to the granola when it has cooled down.
Enjoy for breakfast or as a snack, topped with berries or fruit of the season!
(For a raw version of this granola simply make sure the ingredients are raw. Dry it at a temperature below 42C/104F. This will take longer and is best to be done over night.)
