Just one

...one of the little ones didn't survive.  He seems to have been too weak to fend for himself and the milk we gave him didn't keep him alive.  Nature goes its way.  Sometimes there is nothing we can do...
Still I am a little sad.  I miss him.

Kittie & Paulchen

= today = July, 21st

== the day was == ...filled with a little bit of desaster and role of thunder - figuratively.  But 'the air has cleaned' now, just like after a real shower of rain and we all feel better.  I think we were really lacking a good night's sleep - I was definately.  When I am exhausted like that everything seems like insurmountable:  the housework, the cooking, the garden, keeping peace between the children.  In the end I wasn't just raising my voice, but broke down in tears because it was all too much for me. I'm sure it is all because it is so beautifully warm outside until sundown, and so, nobody wants to go to sleep.  Then in the morning everyone gets up at the usual time (inner alarm-clock?), even though they haven't slept enough.  Oh dear!  But after that 'thunder and lightning' outburst we could laugh again and started to pick up the flat together and I made sure the children went to bed at a more reasonable time.  (me too!)

== we made == our own chocolate-spread.  As we didn't have a recipe at hand we threw together butter, ground hazelnuts, vanilla, honey and cocoa powder.  The result was actually very yummy, even though slightly too buttery.  I have to look for a good recipe online - or try to perfect mine. :-)

...selbstgemachtes Nutella. :-)

== the kids == love shooting down the hill with their scooters these days.  Oh, my - I can't watch them.  The speed they gain looks so dangerous!  I had a go myself, though, and understand therefore why they are having so much fun (and that I need not be worried;  they do have a brake on the scooter and they know how to use it)!

== I listened to == an audio-book by Charlotte Link

== I read == "The garden cottage diaries" by Fiona J. Houston;  I read it in one day, it was so lovely.  Fiona Houston lived for one year as a woman of the 18th century in a cottage in Scotland.  In the book she describes her daily life, the challenges she was facing, the emotions that came up and shares beautiful photographs, traditional scottish recipes, a list of important chores she had to do during each month and lists of the food available to her throughout the seasons.  Trying very hard to be authentic, Fiona does cheat now and again a little, but in the end she makes it through the year and is grateful for the insights she gained into scottish rural life over 200 years ago.
I highly recommend this book for everyone who is interested in Scotland and its history, history in general, simple living, reading journals and gardening.  I enjoyed it very much!

== in the kitchen == more berries: black currents, red currents, jostaberries, gooseberries and more raspberries.  Love them all!  I tried to dry red currents as a winter addition to porridge or musli or cookies.   Nettle soup for dinner + lots of salad.

== thoughts & plans == I will make sure we have adequate sleep and rest.  As I have a week off it will be easier to just go with the flow and get things done that have been waiting for far too long.

= today = July, 18th

== the day was == so much fun!  :-)  Well, in the morning I actually tried to battle the white fly with a home-made concoction of oregano, horsetail, garlic and citronella essential oil.  I sprayed the tea onto the cabbage-leaves and also cleaned off the white residue the flies leave on the plants.  I wasn't sure if this procedure was doing any good at all.  But when I checked on the plants later in the afternoon all the white flies on the cabbage were dead and fell off.  I'm not exactly sure what killed them but I was happy about the result.  Unfortunately, in the evening there were new white flies - and I realized I just have to keep spraying for a while now.
After work was done, the kids and I went to the outdoor-swimming pool.  It was great fun and it was all splashing in the water, shooting down the slide, diving and doing 'stunts' (not me, mind) :-)
We stayed until almost closing time, then the kids went to feed Lisa's friend's pets and noticed that one of the chicks had hatched.  They phoned me straight away with total excitement.  So sweet!
The evening faded with the kids playing on the (car-free) road with scooters and street chalk.

...so toll!
So süß!

== we made == I didn't make anything, but I composed another piece on the piano.  A meeting with the piano-teacher is in order today.

== I listened to == Kari Jobe, just beautiful and putting my heart in the right place.

== I read == just a little in the map of time;  H.G.Wells got introduced now and things are getting more interesting.

== in the kitchen == Blueberries and raspberries to snack on; lots of salad from the garden; the kids requested fried potatoes (cut into mini-cubes) - very simple!

== thoughts & plans == I most probably will have next week off.  Holiday!  I wonder how to use the time well and wisely:  lots of garden work?  Some sewing?  More visits to the swimming-pool?  Writing at the Ice-Cream parlour?  :-)

Nächste Woche habe ich höchstwahrscheinlich frei.  Urlaub! :-)

= today =, July 15th

== the day was == ...we had a couple of very lovely days here.  Visiting neigbours and friends, spending lots of time outdoors as the weather is so warm and summerly.  Everyone seems to be in a good mood when the sun is shining and people chat across the garden-fence. :-)
...whilst playing near the riverbank the kids found a huge spot with woodland strawberries - tiny little things with such big flavour!  We ate so many!
Also, I noticed that there are a lot of butterflies fluttering from one flower to the next these days, and everything is buzzing with bees.  (Stand under a lime-tree when it's in bloom!  Wow!)  I love summer-time - I just wished it would last just a month or two longer...
...in the garden I planted marigold to keep the white flies at bay, and I stuck sticks from the elder-bush into the voles' wholes.  Apparently they don't like the smell?  Well, we'll see.  At least my bush beans are finally appearing .  I had to lay them into the ground three times!  They never got eaten before, but who knows - maybe the voles like them and collected them for their secret stash.  This time round, though, I am happy to see them grow fast and strong.
... had the chance to work with W., our piano-teacher, on more piano-pieces and tried out sounds on the computer-programm.  That was fun! :-)

== we made == I am still working on my shawl.  I am not a fast knitter.

== the kids == ... Lisa, the oldest, is looking after her friend's pets and chicken for a week.  The parents intrusted her with the house-keys so that she can care for those (much loved) animals whilst T. is at summer-camp.  Great to see her take responsibility like that!
Yesterday she went to the swimming pool alone because all of her frinds are travelling.  She thought she might meet someone there and ended up playing with my neighbours granddaughter who is 5.  :-)  So sweet!

So süß! :-)

== I listened to == Sherlock Holmes audio-plays.  Thrilling and funny at the same time.  I love to listen to audio-books or audio-plays whilst doing mundane taks.

== in the kitchen == Blueberries and raspberries to snack on; for dinner Sheperd's Pie and a big garden salad.

== thoughts & plans == I have to finish some tasks today, lots of things I started and didn't finish:  letter-writing, decorating the front-room, clearing the garden, etc.  Also I want to go and print out some fotographs that I took.  Tried to do that last night at the supermarket but the printer wasn't working.  So, try again today.

= today = July, 13th

== the day was == ...good.  Really.  But at the end of it I just fell into bed - I was so tired.  I had to catch up with the housework;  continued to clear the 'jungle-patch' in the garden and made some progress;  went down with the kids to take part in the 'duck-race' - a fun event to raise money for a local charity;  had to do the weekly shopping and tried to work on some piano-pieces.

...gut.  Wirklich.

== we made == I am still working on my shawl.  This is the pattern on Ravelry, and I am making fast progress.  It is fun knitting it and I am looking forward to wearing it.

I stricke weiterhin an meinem Tuch.

== the kids == ...had a fun-time at the duck-race yesterday.  They each bought one duck and then watched them with anticipation going down the stream amongst the others, bobbing up and down in the water.  They hoped to win a prize, of course.  But we didn't.  And Amelie was so disappointed that she burst into tears on our way home.  Oh dear!

== in the kitchen == Oh, blueberries!  I love them so much.  And raspberries, too!  They are on our table every day as long as the season lasts.  Lots of arugula from the garden.  And raw veggie-noodles with coconut-curry-sauce.

Oh, Blaubeeren!

== thoughts & plans == lots of thoughts about the garden.  How do I drive away those white flies from my collard-plants?  How do I get rid of the voles that are digging wholes and disturb the growth of the crops?  How many blueberry bushes could I plant when I have finally cleared that jungle-patch?  I would love to have lots of berries in my garden.  We have strawberries and red currents, already, and one blueberry bush.  But I would love to add black currents, raspberries and more blueberries for next year.

== the day was == long and full; I enjoyed the morning running errands and paying a visit to the playground with two of the kids.  Unfortunately, I had a headache all day long.  In the afternoon I had a short lie-down before I met with Lisa's piano-teacher to go through a couple of piano-pieces I have composed.  (they are not as grand as it sounds, but it was a joy to play them to another composer who was able to jot down the notes and hopefully will transform them into a printable version.)

== we made == well, I received the expected wool with the mail today and I started to knit an easy shawl for myself.  Looks like this so far:

== the kids == the two older ones are spending a lot of time right now writing lists of things they want to build on MineCraft - for the day when we will have a computer that can actually run this game.  ;-)  Amelie was with me out and about, also playing a lot.  Tonight she and her brother created a labyrinth game with magnets.  That was fun!

== I read == I continued with "The map of time".

== in the kitchen == some very yummy honey melon and blueberries; tomato-vegetable-soup for dinner; apart from that it was a help-yourself situation for everyone, as I wasn't at home much.

Isla

= today = July, 8th

== the day was == a slow-paced, warm and sunny day filled with outdoor activities.  There's so much to be done in the garden right now, and it is perfect weather to get at least a little bit accomplished.  I had to plant more beans, and give the collard, Brussel sprouts and pumpkin plants more space.  Also, there is a big patch, yet to be cleared (from what looks like a jungle) that I invision filled with flowers and vegetables and a romantic bench under the elder tree; not this year, mind, but hopefully next :-).  Also, we just HAD to visit that new ice-cream shop in the park!

== we made == I didn't get round to any creative endeavours.  I am waiting for some new wool to arrive in the mail... I found a nice pattern to knit myself a shawl - well, it is a very basic and simple pattern to be honest.  But I want to be sure I am doing fine with this first, then I will try something more complicated. ;-)

== the kids == had a lot of water splashing fun outside.   Water fights, letting little boats swim in the tub in the garden, running little streams on the parking lot with the watering can, cooling their feet in the small river.  My oldest daughter frequents the outdoor swimming-pool with her friend a lot these days and returns home totally exhausted in the evening.  Aaaah...summer-time!

== I listened to == my own piano-playing.

== I read == I just started 'The map of time' by Felix J. Palma.  The book intrigued me because it is about time-travel and some interesting characters like H.G.Wells appear throughout the story.  Unfortunately, I find it difficult to enjoy the authors writing-style and I can't quite get into the main character.  I will continue reading, though, as the story does make me curious.

== in the kitchen == as strawberry season is almost over, melon-time has begun.  We also made some popsicles (and ate them all in one go).  Chocolate & Vanilla.  Today I want to try WatermelonRaspberry-ice-lollies.  Yummy!

== thoughts & plans == there is lots to do: finishing decorating the living-room walls, and then the corridor has to be done, too;  clear that patch in the garden;  sew more purses;  get Lisa's room in order and replace the old curtains;  make a plan for holiday activities, as none of the kids is going to camp this year; etc.

= today = July, 5th

== the day was == well, yesterday was a fun day and I forgot to write in this space.  Today was rather hard for me, because I was actually very tired.  I really needed to lie in bed or on the couch or in the garden (which I actually did in the end for about half an hour...at least), but I didn't get much of a chance.  I hate days like these.  I hate when I don't have much time to sit or lie down, but on the other hand I don't have the energy to do anything properly... I am sure you know these kind of days, too.  Somehow I am sort of glad when they are over and I have the prospect to go to bed soon and close my eyes.
I don't want to complain, though.  I really don't.  I know that I am blessed with everything here and I should be happy and grateful - it has just been one of those days.  ;-)  Tomorrow there's going to be a new one, a fresh start, everything will be fine.

== we made == yesterday we made some Montessori touch cards from sandpaper and cardboard.  The little ones like to use these cards also to make pictures.

== the kids == were quite creative today.  The bed turned into a tree-house and there were quite a few adventures going one.  Also the craft drawer was pulled open a few times for supplies to make binoculars, telescopes and also a camera (not digital, mind - it produced REAL pictures. :-)

== I listened to == the birds outside - especially in the morning

== I read == only an adventure story to my kids.  I tried to start a new book for myself but only managed one page so far.  Doesn't really count, does it.

== in the kitchen == we had a traditional potato-stew (with meat in it) for dinner; I used to love this when I was a child.  I cooked it for us today for the first time and, yes, at first it was really yummy, but then we decided that it was too seasoned and too heavy for us.  We are not used to this kind of cooking anymore, I think.  Jamie even got a tummy ache later.  Maybe I can change the recipe a little to make the stew lighter and ...um, vegetarian?

== thoughts & plans == we have Lisas best friend over for a few days whilst the rest of her family went to attend a festival.  It was a bit spontaneous and Lisa isn't even here to be with her friend.  Therefore I was a little bit unsure about the whole plan... I was worried if T. would be bored to death with us, or feel uncomfortable or displaced in a way.  But it was actually quite fun so far, we had chats and laughter and supper-time with pizzas.  It's great to have visitors, spontaneous ones as well, and I decided I should worry less and be more flexible. :-)

= today = July 3d

== the day was == with ups and downs; the kids were very energetic and I wasn't.  But anyway, not everyday is a sunshine-day, and on the other hand I received a wonderful message that lifted half of the worry-weight off my shoulders:  I got a phonecall from someone needing part-time daycare for her son.  It is really just part-time, but better than nothing. And at least things are moving.  Who knows how many of those kind of phone-calls I will receive tomorrow, next week, next month?  :-)

== we made == well, I made a new banner.  I thought it was about time.  Do you like it?  I do!

== the kids == were a bunch of rascals yesterday, but they did have a lot of fun.  Jamie's friend came round in the afternoon with waterguns and they spent their afternoon outside whilst Amelie and I went to town to get sandpaper and go for a walk along the stream afterwards.
I also have to mention that we did have a fun time trying to speak English at the supper-table.  It was hilarious, but they did pick up a lot of new words and put together sentences that actually made sense.  :-)  We should do this everyday!

== I listened to == nothing in particular

== I read == I didn't find the time to read; well, not a book, anyway.  I did read in a lot of blogs yesterday and that was very inspiring, too.

== in the kitchen == a simple day: we had fried potato patties and applesauce for dinner and salad, braised chard and veggie sandwiches for supper (the kids also cooked themselves some spaghetties).  Strawberries for desert.

== thoughts & plans == I really would like to choose a new knitting project.  Usually I am rather the practical knitter:  socks, dishcloths, hats, scarfs, etc.  But maybe I should try something else this time.  I am intrigued by those lacey shawls - but I am afraid I will get frustrated with the pattern, with the counting and having to pay attention to what I do.  You know what I mean?  Straight knitting is so satisfying to me because I don't have to look at what I am doing - I even forget about it.  My hands just move all by themselves whilst I watch a movie or read a book or have a conversation with a dear friend.  But still, I would love to go for something different and look for some really lovely wool, as well.  As a treat.  As some kind of luxery.  Do you have any ideas or suggestions for me?

= today = July, 2nd

== the day was == sunny and warm; we spent more time outside than inside, I would say.  Even though it was a very relaxed day I felt continously tired ... yawning all the time.  I seem to need a bit more sleep - I am waking up an hour later in the morning, too.  I think it's worries that are draining my energy... worries about how I will support this family if there aren't any new kids following the ones leaving.  One has left already, the other one will start Kindergarten beginning of August.  But no-one else seems to need a child-minder right now.  So...how will I handle this insecure situation?  I would like to stay focused and in trust that everything will turn out fine.  But then the worries are always there in the back of my mind. :-(

== we made == a few small purses.  Songbirds-purses, in fact.  They are easy to sew and quite cute, but I think I will try out a few changes to the pattern today.

== the kids == had lots of fun dressing up, jumping on matresses, playing in the garden, racing about on the kettcar and looking after a stray cat.

== I listened to == some old audio plays; my son has kind of developed a passion for these stories :-)

== I read == Agatha Christy; I finished the book whilst lying on a blanket in the garden.

== in the kitchen == unhealthy breakfast with chocolate spread; mediterranean stew with homemade ciabatta for dinner (we eat dinner at lunch-time); chard braised in butter, salad of rocket, lettuce and wild herbs from my garden and little strawberries sweet like bonbons for supper.

== thoughts & plans == I am working on a second business right now.  In the long run I hope it will make up half of my income.  I love selling things and working on the computer, therefore I try to combine both.  I realize that it is important for me to work as a childminder only half of the day, preferably morning till early afternoon.  Having to be present to the children from early morning until late evening (with a special needs child) was slowly wearing me out because I never actually had a real break.  I have to change this and create enough time for myself to wind down and also spend time with my own kids.  Oh, the balancing of things - it is quite a juggling act!

= today= July, 1st

A new month, a new idea.   I started to write a detailed log into my journal so that I can see where my time actually goes and what I accomplish (and what I don't).  And I thought I might post a summerized daily 'log-entry' here at Songbirds throughout July, as well, to share with you.  Some pictures will be included. :-)

My log for yesterday (hopefully the one for today will be posted tonight):

== the day was == quite busy with day-to-day activities;  we went to the post-office, did some shopping, in the afternoon I could tend to my garden a bit, just before the thunder and rain set in.  It was a good day, actually.  Also a wee bit sad as it was the last day here for one of the children I look after - hopefully he will return to us very soon when his Mom has found new employment.

== we made == laundry soap!  Yes, for the very first time.  My son was doing the grating bit and I mixed all the ingredients together.  It was fun!  And I already washed a load.  The washing feels a bit different than usually.  I thought next time I might do a rinse cycle with vinegar as I do with my hair after washing it with baking soda (Natrium).  It works wonders for my hair - so it should also for the washing. :-)

== the kids == had a great time converting their room into a giant den.  Later they built a kind of slide for somersaults and jumps and all that with matresses.  In the afternoon I took Amelie to her friend and Jamie and I had a relaxing time in the garden.  He did a lot of thinking about this and that, asking me questions whilst picking strawberries and red green currants.  He also fetched me water from the stream to give my collard, kale and brokkoli a drink.  (He ended up watering his sunflowers a lot, though).  In the evening, just before bedtime, I send some messages to and fro with Lisa who is currently having a great time at her grandmother's.  Lots of visiting relatives, walks, activities - I heard.  Today they are apparently going to the zoo.

== I listened to == nothing in particular

== I read == a bit in the Agatha Christy thriller I borrowed from the library.

== in the kitchen == homemade bread, lots of different berries, salad-greens and wild herbs from the garden, radish-greens & chard with garlic over maccaroni, some home-made cookies to nibble.

== thoughts & plans == I am looking for a way to get more organized in my head.  I do write lists and they help me a lot to stay focused.  But I have a problem with making decisions.  Right now I have a lot of ideas: ways to make money, creative projects, ideas for writing, things I want to make, things I want to try, ... sometimes all of this is swirling around in my head, a little bit like butterflies, each one with a beautiful, inticing colour - I don't know which one to catch.  Is there a good system to find out what is the best thing to do next?  Somehow I end up doing nothing when I have so many possibilities.  I would be happy for any suggestions! :-)
